Romania street dogs
Dear ute,
The death of a child is heartbreaking, and in the case of the little boy who, according to news accounts, was killed recently by dogs in a Bucharest park in Romania, tragic. Our heartfelt sympathies are with his family.
Not surprisingly, the Romanian government has mounted a vigorous response to this horrible event. The vote to kill all the stray dogs in the city, however, is unlikely to produce a sustainable solution even if the authorities do achieve their immediate goal.
Please, take urgent action today and tell the Romanian president that killing street dogs as a way to protect humans is not the solution!
Dog killing programs have been around for nearly 100 years – shooting, poisoning and gassing dogs indiscriminately. Not one of these programs has proven successful in controlling dog populations sustainably.
HSI has offered our expertise to the Romanian government because we have a proven approach to reduce aggression and disease: namely, a humane and effective mass sterilization approach that results in a decrease in street dog populations, a reduction in the incidence of dog bites, and treatment that limits the spread of diseases among both dogs and humans.
The Romanian government owes its people (some of whom have already written to us asking for help) an effective approach that will help the community and its animals. Help make it happen and contact authorities today.
Sincerely, Kelly
